Beauty therapy is a fantastic career for anyone. With the ability to be able to work in a variety of areas, and hours to suit your commitments, what more could you ask for? Well, there's a lot more to it than just a good job earning lots of money. The first aspect is a qualification, and did you know that you DO actually have to be qualified to use your skills on clients, and it has to be a recognised qualification, not just a piece of paper that says someone showed you how to file a nail! In this section we will try and help you avoid the pitfalls. QUALIFICATIONS ESSEX SCHOOL OF BEAUTY DIPLOMA: This is a recognised practitioner diploma which will give you the ability to be able to work in any environment ie. Spa, Home, Salon or Mobile, etc. THE FOLLOWING IS NOT OFFERED BY ESSEX SCHOOL OF BEAUTY ATTENDANCE DIPLOMAS: These are generally not accepted by insurance companies or governing bodies, as they do not offer recognised training. An attendance diploma means that you have only attended a session of a particular subject, not that you have had to pass or learn any specific content of that subject. Hence the reason it is not recognised by insurance companies and governing bodies. PRODUCT TRAINING: Again these courses are not generally accepted by insurance companies or governing bodies. These courses are designed for therapists and technicians that already have practitioner diplomas and wish to learn about a specific product e.g. Creative Liquid & Powder Nail extensions. This is also known as a conversion course. NON RECOGNISED DIPLOMAS: There are various establishments which offer to train students, and they will quite often award you with a diploma upon completing your training, but have not obtained approval for their syllabus. Therefore once you have paid and completed this training it may not be possible to get insurance cover or be able to work within the industry. WHAT DOES AN APPROVED SYLLABUS MEAN? Within any
training that is approved you are required to achieve a pass in various
elements, these would include: The syllabus is the training that you will receive for each course and this will be your full training manual. You are required to have a full training manual for each subject you are taking so you have a point of reference. Your training manual or syllabus would have been sent to the relevant body for them to inspect. They would then decide if there has been enough content for the student to be a competent therapist after completing all the relevant study. For an industry recognised diploma, you are expected to have passed the course/training in order to be awarded your diploma. This will then allow you to be able to get insurance and start working. WHERE CAN I WORK? There are a number of possibilities once you have qualified. It will greatly depend upon whether you want to work a few hours each week, part-time or full-time. Do you want to work for yourself or would you rather be employed? HOME: Many therapists work from home as they find it convenient for their family commitments, have a room to be able to convert into a treatment room, and just like the idea of not having to travel. This can work extremely well, so long as you remember to make sure that there are no screaming children running around! It's not ideal when someone is trying to relax and enjoy a treatment, and you have to stop to sort them out!! If working from home, try to be sure that your family will be supportive as it may intrude into their private lives a little. Sensible planning should make for a harmonious home and business so long as you are organised, and a very lucrative business could be yours. MOBILE: This is one of the most popular areas for independent therapists. Many clients prefer to have someone coming to them, it may suit their lifestyle, they may be unable to leave the house, often they find travelling to a salon too inconvenient. A lot of clients that prefer mobile therapists, do so because they find the salon a daunting place to visit. Good planning is the key to making your mobile business a successful business. SALON:
Whether you are thinking of working in a salon or owning your own, this
can be a very enjoyable but busy way of working. You will be expected
to work to a set time as clients will be booked in continuously, and
confidence along with good social skills will be sought. Although owning
your own salon is hard work, it brings a great deal of reward too. Who
knows a string of salons SPA: This has always been one of the most popular working options for prospective therapists. Works the same way as a salon, but usually in a very attractive working environment! CRUISE SHIP: This has to be the most popular working option for the therapist, and is seen as a truly luxurious way to work. How nice to travel around the world, whilst getting paid for it! This has to be one of the most hard working of all the options, as the hours are often long with only a few days given to visit your port of call. This type of job can be hard to find as positions are much in demand. Hopefully this small insight will help you to decide which courses are most suited to your requirements and how you want to carry out the treatments after qualifying. |
